Festival Rescheduled to May 31-Jun 1

May 16, 1PM

-- Good news! The National Park Service has just notified us that we can hold the festival on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st. We hope that all of you will still be able to join us, as we are expecting another fun and exciting weekend.

We realize that some teams will be losing paddlers due to the change in dates. Please note:

1) Mixed crews must notify us as soon as possible, and no later than May 23rd, if they need to switch their boat to an Open classification. Captains, please enter your classification via the online database.

2) New paddlers are required to attend at least one training session. We are working to schedule some training sessions between now and the festival to train any new paddlers you may be adding to your rosters.

3) You can participate on Saturday only (250 meter races), Sunday only (500 meter races), or on both days. Captains: Please edit your race preference via the online database.

4) Please send an updated roster by May 23rd to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

5) Pre-registration will be on Friday, May 30th. Time and place to be determined.

CLASSIFICATIONS:

  • Mixed: At least 8 out of 20 PADDLERS must be female
  • Open: No gender restrictions
  • Women: All female crew
  • Youth: All Youth teams will race "mixed" with at least 6 female paddlers

Teams wishing to cancel will have until Midnight, May 23rd, to notify us by email that they wish to cancel. Their registration fees will be applied towards the 2009 festival. Please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it if you wish to cancel.

Thanks again for all your patience and understanding as we move the festival dates.

We hope to see you all on the river on the 31st!

NPS nixes June 14th

May 15, 5PM-- We had previously mentioned that June 14th-15th was the tentative date for the rescheduled festival. We just received word from National Park Service (NPS) that another group is using the area on June 14th. We are currently working to clear some conflicts on the alternative date of May 31-Jun 1st (the more probable scenario) or finding another location to have the races on June 14th-15th (less probable). As soon as we know something definite, we will post it here on the website and send it out to the dragoncaptains mailing list.   It generally takes us several months to get all of the required permits from all the bureaucracies involved, and now we're working very hard to get it all reissued in a couple of days.   Thanks for all of your patience!

Potomac River Flooded, Festival Postponed

May 15-- The water from the torrential rains that hit our area last weekend is finding its way down to the Potomac, and the water levels are very high, and the current is very fast. Rowing crews are not currently launching from the docks at TBC, and have instead packed up their boats and are rowing out of Anacostia.

To give a sense of scale, we normally get 10,000 cubic feet per second coming over Little Falls at this time of year. (median reading for the past 80 years). In only 20% of the years on record have we ever gotten over 20,000 cubic feet per second. As of right now, we are getting 95,000 cubic feet per second coming over Little Falls -- nine times the normal amount of water!

Graph of Discharge, cubic feet per second

The water level will fall off somewhat but then rise again over the weekend as more rain arrives on Friday. (see forecast below). However, it will be an extraordinarily fast current, well above normal levels, which will be difficult to paddle and steer in. We have decided that it is not possible to run races safely nor fairly on the river this weekend. If conditions are as forecast, Thompson Boat Center would not allow us to launch boats. The Harbor Master from the DC Metropolitan Police Department has "wholeheartedly" recommended that we postpone the festival.

We have therefore decided to reschedule the festival. This was not an easy decision to make, as we know it will disrupt the plans that many of you, your friends, and family have been making for a long time. We know that many of you are traveling long distances-- even internationally-- to come to our festival. We realize that it will also require a massive effort on the part of the organizing committee to reschedule all of the many details that go into making this festival possible.

Preregistration, originally scheduled for this Friday, May 16th, has been postponed. We are tentatively planning on holding the festival on June 14th and 15th. This date is TENTATIVE, pending approval from the National Park Service. As soon as we receive approval, we will post this information on the website.

Cancellation Policy: Once we confirm the new festival date, there will be a period of one week during which teams may cancel their registration for this year's festival. Teams that cancel will have their registration payments (not including training fee) rolled forward to the 2009 festival. Because this cancellation was due to factors outside of our control, there will be no refunds provided.

Thank you for your understanding, and please accept our apologies for any inconvenience which this may cause.
